Science Update!

Today in science we reviewed the light test that students took yesterday.  We had our highest class averages of the year!  Thank you for all you do at home to help your child succeed here at school–they should be proud of their hard work!  Tests will come home at the end of the week in Friday Folders.

We also began the second half of this unit–sound!  Over the next few weeks students will be learning about sound and completing some noisy investigations.  This unit also involves some fun extensions.  Mrs. Larson will be extending the learning of our students during music on Wednesdays.  We will be having a “reverse field trip” when the Kalamazoo Nature Center visits us in a few weeks, giving a presentation called “Good Vibrations.”  This unit also includes the opportunity to learn about and make various instruments.  If you have glass jars, oatmeal canisters, or tin cans that you would be willing to donate, our scientists/musicians would appreciate the variety of materials to use during their work time.  Thank you so much!

Tomorrow all of Lakeside will be attending the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at the high school. The students will be walking over to the high school right away tomorrow morning. We will be walking over in our warm weather gear, and the students will be asked to bring a back pack with dry shoes to change into when we arrive at our high school host room. We will be gone a majority of the morning for this amazing experience, and should get back a bit before lunch. We are really looking forward to this, and I am sure the students will have a lot to share when they get back home.

Last Friday marked the end of our second unit this year, Changes in Motion.  Today and tomorrow students will be completing a study guide to prepare for their test.  Our Changes in Motion test will be given this Friday, December 9thStudy guides will come home on Tuesday, and I am encouraging our scientists to spend some time reviewing on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings so that they will be well prepared for the test.  Students have truly done a great job on the investigations and concepts in this unit, and I am anxious to see their growth and progress!

All three classes have finished the amazing read aloud book The Invention of Hugo Cabret.  It is an amazing book and the kids really seemed to enjoy it.  The book has been made into a movie, and we thought it might be neat to see the movie together.  Mrs. Porter, Mr. Mitton, and possibly Miss Sierz will be making our way to Celebration Cinema North on Sunday Nov. 27 to enjoy the movie.  The movie is at 3:15 and is in 3D which should be pretty neat.  If you and your child would like to join us at that time, that would be great.  This is not a teacher supervised trip, we are just letting you know when we will be there in case you would like to join us.  Have a great Thanksgiving break.  Thanks again for all that you do!

Veterans’ Day Assembly

Lakeside will be celebrating Veterans’ Day with a school-wide assembly on Wednesday, November 9, beginning at 2:30 p.m. in the gymnaisum.  Parents are invited not only to attend but to come a bit early to check out the various displays each classroom has created in honor of this special day.  In addition, over 100 veterans who are related to our very own Lakeside Lions will be featured in a large display, so feel free to come early to check that out as well.

Reading Marathon!

On Monday, the third graders will be enjoying an all-morning reading marathon!  Students are invited to bring extra books from home to read and to share with others.  In addition to that, students may bring in a pillow, blanket, and/or small stuffed animal.  They are also invited to wear extra-comfy clothes, including even pajamas and/or slippers, on that day.  Lakeside Lions always read a zillion books — this is a fun chance for us to take an extra-long chunk of the school day to do just that!

Are you following the excitement over at www.americanmathchallenge.com?  At the time of this writing, despite a late start due to MEAP testing, our school is in 31st in the nation, our class is 46th in the nation, and several individuals are close to getting into the top 100 in the nation.  I’ll keep updating our progress in the comments below, but you can follow our progress directly by clicking on the link above.   Enjoy!

Science Updates

Today our scientists took their first unit test on Earth and Me.  These will be reviewed in class later in the week and will come home in Friday Folders!

We will also be kicking off our next unit: Changes in Motion.  This unit is designed around three key understandings:

  1. Motion is the change in position of an object.
  2. The force of gravity pulls objects towards earth.
  3. Forces can start, stop, or change the motion of an object.

Students will be working to gain these key understandings through comparing and contrasting the motion of common objects in terms of speed and direction, showing that force is needed to change the direction and speed of moving objects, communicating their scientific findings to others, and working to investigate questions through multiple trials.  This unit is full of fun, hands-on activities that make these basic principles of physics come to life!

Here’s Miss Centa’s art website, a great site for you to check out when you get the chance: www.centa.shutterfly.com
